Alison arrived at the clearing. No one was there. She maneuvered her car so she could drive straight out if she had to leave in a hurry. She was a bit early for the scheduled meet but also worried. Sheâd heard some static in her ear a few moments before.
âT1, status please.â
Silence.
âT1?â
Maybe thereâs an issue with the communications. Maybe she lost or broke hers. That could explain the static. Alison didnât want to contemplate alternatives. Sheâd wait a little longer, then check in with the parents. Her mission was complete. She would be allowed to seek contact with them, although she would have to do so by a precise protocol.
âHello?â
The unfamiliar male voice in her ear startled Alison. She remained silent. Waiting.
âHello? Whoever is on the other side of this, I advise you to answer.â
There could be only one reason it wasnât Alexa who was speaking. Sheâs been captured!
âI know you hear me.â
Alison refused to answer.
âWhoever you are, you should know we have the girl who was wearing this. Sheâs in a lot of trouble. She shot a very important person. If she was acting on your orders, you should come forward. She might be given some lenience if you turn yourself in. She seems young. Wonât do well in prison. You good with that?â
Stunned, Alison stayed silent. I shot my target. Did she shoot hers also and just not get away? Or do they think Alexa is me?
Alison grabbed the paper map of the city and began studying it. If they have Alexa, itâs likely theyâll take her to the police station for questioning. Sheâs probably in a holding cell, or perhaps an interview room. If I donât answer, maybe theyâll think Iâve abandoned her to save my own skin. Maybe they wonât expect an attempt to free her.
Knowing this was a training event set up by her parents, Alison wasnât sure when and how it was considered over. She hadnât thought to ask. Stupid. Wonât make that mistake again. She thought back to when she was eleven and she hadnât quit until sheâd simply collapsed, and Sam had brought her into the house. Was she expected to push the boundaries like that again? Or should she contact her parents and report that her side of the mission was complete. But then, what about Alexa? She wondered how much the people in town knew of the training event. Are they all in on it? Do they know weâre twins? Is the man speaking to me part of the game or not?
Alison thought about her parents. They were masterminds at setting up these kinds of scenarios. She guessed only a few people were involved in the training. She remembered the confusion on the driversâ faces during her escape. She didnât think they were involved. Just innocents caught in the process. She decided it didnât matter who knew what. She couldnât leave Alexa. Together as one. That was their motto. If she couldnât rescue her twin, then theyâd both go down together.
